DECISION TIME
Is the Shira Route Right for You?
The Shira Route offers an impressive approach across Kilimanjaro’s western plateau. However, its high starting elevation is an important consideration when choosing your route.
You may appreciate Shira if you
- Want to explore the broad, open landscapes of the Shira Plateau.
- Prefer a western approach to Kilimanjaro.
- Are interested in a route with distinctive volcanic scenery.
- Have a suitable itinerary and understand the demands of starting at high altitude.
- Want to compare Shira's approach with Lemosho and other Kilimanjaro routes.
What should you consider before choosing it?
- High starting elevation: A vehicle takes you to a trailhead commonly around 3,500 metres, which can be a substantial jump in altitude for someone arriving from low elevation.
- Acclimatisation: Your body may have little time to adjust before the first night at altitude.
- Physical demands: Expect multiple days of trekking, uneven ground, cold weather and a demanding summit attempt.
- Camping: Standard packages use tents at mountain camps.
- Route variations: The 7-day and 8-day itineraries can follow different camp schedules, so the number of days alone does not tell the whole story.
From the Shira Plateau to Kilimanjaro's Summit
The Shira Route has a distinctive beginning. Rather than walking through the lower rainforest on the first day, climbers are driven up towards the plateau and begin trekking in a high-altitude environment.
Begin high on the western side
After registration at Londorossi Gate, a vehicle takes you along the mountain road towards the Shira trailhead. The first walk is generally short compared with the following trekking days, but the elevation is already significant. Take the day slowly and follow your guide’s advice.
Explore the Shira Plateau
The plateau opens into a landscape of moorland, volcanic rock and broad views towards Kibo. Depending on your itinerary, you may pass through the Shira 1 and Shira 2 areas and explore distinctive features of the plateau.
Continue towards Lava Tower
On common southern-circuit itineraries, the route heads east and climbs towards Lava Tower, a prominent volcanic formation at roughly 4,600 metres. Climbers then descend to a lower camp, often Barranco. This pattern of climbing higher during the day and sleeping lower is an important feature of many Kilimanjaro acclimatisation schedules.
Cross the southern circuit
The route continues across high, dry terrain towards Barranco, Karanga and Barafu on standard southern-circuit itineraries. The scenery becomes more rugged as the summit approaches, and the Barranco Wall adds a steep, memorable section to the journey.
Make the summit attempt
From Barafu Camp, climbers commonly begin their summit attempt during the night or early morning. The ascent towards Stella Point and Uhuru Peak is physically demanding because of the altitude, cold and accumulated fatigue. A long descent follows.
THE ROUTE
Shira Route map
The Shira Route begins on the western side of the mountain and crosses the Shira Plateau before continuing towards the summit.
Common southern-circuit route sequence
Londorossi Gate → Shira trailhead → Shira 1 or Simba Camp area → Shira 2 Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp → Stella Point → Uhuru Peak.
The descent commonly follows the Mweka Route through Mweka Camp towards Mweka Gate.
The precise camps and sequence depend on the selected itinerary. Longer northern variations may head towards Moir Hut and the northern circuit instead of following the same southern-circuit schedule throughout.
BEFORE YOU GO
Difficulty, Altitude and Preparation
Climbing Kilimanjaro is a demanding physical undertaking. The Shira Route does not require technical mountaineering skills on its standard trail, but it does require sustained walking, preparation and the ability to cope with high altitude. Its high starting point makes altitude management particularly important.
Altitude
Uhuru Peak stands at 5,895 metres above sea level. At these elevations, the reduced availability of oxygen can affect anyone, regardless of fitness.
The Shira Route commonly begins trekking at around 3,500 metres after a vehicle transfer. Reaching this elevation quickly can be a significant challenge for climbers arriving from low altitude, because the body has limited time to adjust before the first night on the mountain.
A carefully planned itinerary and time to acclimatize are important, but altitude illness remains possible. Additional time at altitude before the climb may be worth discussing with your operator and a qualified healthcare professional.
Physical preparation
Prepare with regular walking and progressively longer hikes, including uphill and downhill terrain. Cardiovascular exercise, leg strength and practice walking for several consecutive days can help you prepare for the physical demands.
Practice with the footwear, clothing and daypack you intend to use on the mountain. Physical fitness can help you manage the walking, but it does not prevent altitude illness.
Summit night
The summit attempt commonly starts around midnight or in the early hours of the morning. Expect cold conditions, a prolonged ascent and a lengthy descent.
On common southern-circuit itineraries, climbers ascend from Barafu Camp towards Stella Point before continuing to Uhuru Peak. Rest, suitable clothing, hydration and following your guides’ instructions are important.
Guide support and safety
Climb with a properly organized guiding team that monitors climbers and knows how to recognize altitude illness. If symptoms develop or worsen, tell your guide immediately. A safe descent may be necessary even if it means stopping short of the summit.
Talk to a qualified healthcare professional before your trip about altitude risks, preventive measures and whether any medication is appropriate for you. Do not self-prescribe altitude medication based solely on online advice.
